As many of you are aware, bee populations have been experiencing sharp declines in recent years. In some places populations have seen a 50% drop in their numbers. Bees are more imperative to the food we eat than most are aware. In fact, ⅓ of the fruits and vegetables that fill the produce sections of our grocery stores are a direct result of bee pollination, and would not exist without them. This phenomenon is referred to as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and scientists have concluded that it stems from harmful pesticides and fungicides used on crops and plants to keep them bug free. The bees carry these substances back to their hive where it creates a domino effect of issues resulting in death.
There is hope on the horizon though! A breakthrough in honey bee immunizations has is spreading a little hope that we could possibly turn this tragedy around. After 15 years of study scientists have looked into how bees immunize their offspring and how it could be used for man-made vaccinations. This vaccine would make the bees immune to harmful diseases that they bring back to the hive, and would strengthen their health. Score one for science!
